Private lessons are the best way to go and the fastest way to learn.
Self taught is ok after learning the bassics, but you might be practicing the wrong thing and pushing your goal backwards.
Each lesson has the information you need to be a professional bass player including theory.
Private lessons are $60 per hour here in Dallas.
On line lessons are also available for $70 per hour.
